New Study Explains Evolution of Bird Flight
23 January 2008
For many years the discussion of how birds evolved the capability of flight has been argued between three camps.
1. They evolved the ability by falling out of trees and gliding down.
2. They evolved the ability by running and flapping and going up.
3. They were designed that way.
The first two camps usually argue by looking at the fossils and basing their conclusions only by the looks of the bones. Ken Dial a Life Sciences Professor at University of Montana has lead a study on living birds to see how they learn how to use their wings and therefore not just using the fossils. His work shows that these living birds use their wings to help get up a incline. He was amazed by the fact that their wing angle did not change from when they were flapping to flying. He said, “This is one of those moments when you slap your forehead and say ‘We’ve been thinking that the wing-stroke is highly specific for different movements, but it turns out that Mother Nature just needs a single wing stroke to accommodate all these behaviors’.” (Notice the capitalization on 'Mother Nature'.)
It is possible to have good observations and yet come up with bad conclusions.
Good Observation #1
Birds have wings.
Good Observation #2
Fossils have wings.
Good Observation #3
Living birds use wings to help run up hills.
Bad Conclusion
"Dinosaurs may have evolved wings to help propel them over rocks and other obstacles that littered their terrain," Professor Dial said.
Mutations do not happen because an animal needs 'help'. Natural selection only selects from genetic information that already exists. It can not create new genes (that create wings in this case) to 'help' them get over rocks or obstacles. Just as you do not have the genes to make wings, neither do dinosaurs. Fossils with wings must have already had all the information to make the wings when it was conceived, and so must its parents, and its parents, and its parents...
The bible says that in the beginning God created every kind of animal. We find plenty of extinct kinds of animals buried and fossilized but we never see new kinds of animals being created today. We see different species but never a new kind of animal. The bible therefore puts birds with wings in camp 3 and our observation backs this up. Instead of believing in the God of the Bible, many choose to believe in evolution that has 'Mother Nature' as their god. It is obvious there is a designer (Romans 1) and to satisfy that fact some have chosen to deify nature and give it the characteristics of God.
Random and blind chance can not create an organized structure. Just a s a tornado can not create a building, mutations can not create a flying wing. The studying of fossils can only tell you that it died. It can not tell you what its parents or grand parents looked like or how they lived. The study of living birds can only tell you how living birds fly, not how a fossil flew.
1. There are flying animals today.
2. There were flying animals long ago.
3. You would need one huge family tree to prove that they are related.
4. No amount of bones in the dirt can prove how or why a wing could evolve.
